A study published today provides the most complete list of solar advantages – from carbon sequestration to pollinator habitat improvement – and provides an important new framework for analyzing solar projects to better understand the full range of benefits.
Nature Sustainability’s peer-reviewed study was conducted by researchers at the Center for Biodiversity, University of California, Davis, and 11 other organizations. It proposes a framework that can more fully understand and ultimately quantify the benefits of solar energy and identify 20 often overlooked advantages. “Solar is more beneficial than most people think,” said Greer Ryan, co-author of the center’s renewable energy and research experts. “We hope that utilities, regulators and legislators will now be able to better understand the importance of solar energy. This will lead to the expansion of rooftop solar energy, more community solar development and low prices for everyone.”
This study is the first of its kind. It also marks a partnership between the Center and the University of California at Davis to advance the future of “wild energy”, emphasizing that solar systems benefit not only humans but also the potential of the entire planet.
“The first step in creating a wild energy future is to understand the true value of solar energy,” said Dr. Rebecca R. Hernandez, assistant professor of the John Muir Environmental Research Institute at the University of California, Davis, and the first author of the paper. “By focusing on all the benefits of renewable energy, we can begin to build an energy system that benefits people, wildlife and wildlife.”
